lass Blowing Studios — The JCGEP Glass Studio is one of the only hot shops in the world utilizing landfill methane gas as a fuel. As fuel costs continue to rise, many glass artists are being forced to consider whether they can afford to stay in business. But by incorporating landfill gas and other renewable fuels, JCGEP is creating new opportunities for both emerging glass artists and for the industry as a whole.
The 1100 sq ft hot shop includes a 400# Stadelman electric furnace, two glory holes fired on methane gas from the landfill, two annealing ovens, a color box, torches and tables. The GEP cold shop is approximately 400 sq ft, furnished with a diamond wheel, tile saw, diamond blade band saw, polishing arbor, hand-held grinder, belt sander, sandblaster, and a series of grit wheels. Adjacent to the shops is a 400 sq ft gallery space that is shared by all GEP tenants. Equipment photos (slideshow)
