Making a Gothic Gauntlet with Brock Martin

When: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, each day
Where: Blacksmith Studio

$390 (materials included) due at registration. 14-hour class. Space is limited to 6 students with a minimum requirement of 3. Pre-registration required. Instructor: Brock Martin of WarFire Forge.

Students will learn various techniques involved in constructing armor. Basic shaping, tools involved, leatherwork, riveting, assembly, etc will be demonstrated and practiced. We will be focusing on a German aesthetic, covering fluting techniques in order to raise line detail in the steel. Basic tools necessary for armor work will be provided and discussed for those interested in pursuing the craft beyond the course. Students will produce a complete gauntlet, wearable to their person with custom accents as they prefer.

Making a Viking Spear with Brock Martin
Date(s): Jul 21, 2018 - Jul 22, 2018

$380 (materials included) due at registration. 14-hour class. Space is limited to 6 students with a minimum requirement of 3. Pre-registration required. Instructor: Brock Martin of WarFire Forge.

Students will design and forge a high carbon spear. Students will learn metallurgy behind producing a quality tool/weapon.  No prior experience required. Topics covered will include: heat treating and tempering, temperature control vs hammer control, posture, limitations of workability, filing, sanding, sharpening, forging the socket, handle construction, and more. We will discuss misconceptions associated with the art and how to fortify proper technique. Students will walk away with a high carbon, functional weapon.

Armor Construction: Gothic German Helm (Sallet) Class
Date(s): Aug 04, 2018 - Aug 05, 2018
When: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, each day

$390 (materials included) due at registration. 14-hour class. Space is limited to 6 students with a minimum requirement of 3. Pre-registration is required. Instructor: Brock Martin from WarFire Forge.

Students will learn various techniques involved in constructing armor, including: sinking vs raising, planishing, articulation, riveting, leather work, fluting, and more. We will cover various hammers and how to properly dress their surfaces for various tasks. We will also discuss tools for armoring and where to find or how to make them. Students will shape, fit, and assemble all of their parts with an articulating visor and leather suspension installed inside the helmet. Students can expect to produce a historical quality German Sallet. No prior experience required.

Bladesmithing: Forging a Seax Knife with Brock Martin
Date(s): Aug 18, 2018 - Aug 19, 2018
When: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, each day

$380 (materials included) due at registration. 14-hour class. Space is limited to 6 students with a minimum requirement of 3. Pre-registration required. Instructor: Brock Martin of WarFire Forge.

In this course, we will be focusing on the iconic Seax knife aesthetic. Students will design their blade on paper and choose their handle material from an array of options. We will cover proper technique in shaping steel as well as how to overcome obstacles that can be encountered while forging blades. Proper control and technique will be reinforced throughout the course as we discuss the properties and approach to making any quality tool. We will cover metallurgy and heat treating processes for various steels. Students will walk away from the course with a high carbon, functional blade. No prior experience required.
